Item A Brazilian multicenter pilot case series on the efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy for COVID-19-related taste dysfunction(Elsevier B.V.) As well as its pathophysiology remains to be unclear, there is not enough information about the efficacy and safety of the available treatments. This study aims to report a series of cases using PBMT for the management of COVID-19-related taste impairment. 8 female and 2 male patients sought medical help for taste impairment (either partially or completely) after COVID-19 infection. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) on the tongue mucosa was then proposed but with 3 different protocols. Taste perception at baseline and before every laser session was evaluated using a visual analog scale. Irrespective of the PBMT protocol, taste recovery was noted in all cases but with varying degrees of improvement. given the high prevalence rates of taste dysfunction in COVID-19 patients and the lack of information about the available treatments, PBMT seems to be a promising therapeutic modality but not dependent on the total number of laser sessions and the interval between them. The choice of the most suitable laser protocol as well as the knowledge of the exact photonic mechanisms, however, need to be better studied.Item Analysis of the Sars-cov-2 virus spike protein in 2D and 3D neuronal models of Alzheimer's disease associated with photobiomodulation treatment(2026-04-17) Soares, Cristina Pacheco; Sant'Anna, Luciana Barros; Ito, Cristiane Yumi Koga; Andrade, Erick José Nogueira de; São José dos CamposAlzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia worldwide, characterized by a complex pathophysiological scenario involving neuroinflammation and intense oxidative stress. At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic has raised concerns about the neurodegenerative effects of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Considering that oxidative stress is a central mechanism shared by both AD and the sequelae of COVID-19, this work used hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an experimental model of oxidative insult. The objective was to investigate how the spike protein enhances cellular damage and to evaluate the neuroprotective potential of photobiomodulation (PBM) with red LED (660 nm) in these contexts. For this, SHSY5Y cells differentiated into two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) neuronal models were used. The cells were exposed to recombinant spike protein (0.5 µg/mL) and H2O2 (200 µM), either individually or in combination, to simulate an aggravated toxicity environment. Cell viability and metabolism were monitored using the Alamar Blue assay and flow cytometry (Live/Dead). Confocal microscopy analyses allowed for the evaluation of nuclear (Hoechst), mitochondrial (MitoTracker), cytoskeletal (rhodamine-phalloidin), and focal adhesion (FAK) integrity. Additionally, a model of neuronal spheroids (3D) was standardized to mimic a more physiologically relevant microenvironment. The results in the 2D model indicated that the spike protein and H2O2 significantly reduced cell viability, with intensified cytotoxic effects upon co-exposure. In contrast, the 3D model exhibited an adaptive response, maintaining viability and increasing metabolic activity, suggesting that tissue architecture modulates neuronal resilience. PBM (3 J/cm²) proved effective in preserving mitochondrial and structural morphology, reducing apoptosis both under basal conditions and oxidative stress, especially in the 3D model. Together, the data reinforce that the Spike protein exerts distinct effects depending on the cellular model and highlight PBM as a promising therapeutic strategy to mitigate oxidative stress and preserve neuronal function in neurodegenerative pathologies and viral sequelae.Item Comparação da mecânica respiratória e performance muscular entre indivíduos curados de SARS-CoV-2 com tratamentodomiciliar e tratamento hospitalar(CDRR Editors) Moreira, Natália Galvão Rocha; Licurci, Maria das Graças Bastos; Nogueira, Daniel Vilela; Fagundes, Alessandra de Almeida; Costa, Maricilia SilvaIntrodução: Após a descoberta feita pelas autoridades da saúde chinesa, identificando o vírus SARS-CoV-2, houve a necessidade de maiores estudos, por se tornar pandemia. Mesmo os infectados por COVID-19 apresentarem sintomas leves ou assintomáticos, observou-se principalmente apresentações clínicas as afecções de trato respiratório e alterações musculares durante o período em que o indivíduo estava infectado, em tratamento ou pós-COVID. Deste modo, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar e comparar o comportamento da mecânica respiratória e performance muscular entre os indivíduos pós-COVID-19 que foram hospitalizados e daqueles que receberam tratamento domiciliar. Método: Avaliação de 13 indivíduos, na faixa etária de 25 a 65 anos, divididos em 2 grupos: Grupo 1 - pós diagnóstico de COVID-19 submetidos a internação hospitalar e Grupo 2 - pós diagnóstico de COVID-19 submetidos a tratamento domiciliar. Ambos os grupos fora do período de isolamento, sem risco de contaminação. Os indivíduos foram avaliados por manovacuometria, pico de fluxo expiratório e performance muscular. Dados apresentados em forma de média e desvio padrão, comparados entre os grupos por meio do teste T-Student com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: houve uma diferença significativa na comparação entre as médias de PIMax do Grupo 1 entre os valores preditos (p=0,04), enquanto as outras comparações obtivemos p>0,05. Conclusão: mesmo com diversas publicações relatando as diferenças na mecânica respiratória e endurance muscular, essas diferenças não foram significativas estatisticamente no nosso trabalho, sendo melhor apresentadas com um maior número de amostra e menor tempo entre a infecção pelo COVID-19 e as avaliações.Item Intranasal photobiomodulation therapy for COVID-19-related olfactory dysfunction: A Brazilian multicenter case series(ELSEVIER) Soares, Luís Eduardo Silva; Guirado, Milena Miranda Goulart; Berlingieri, Giuseppina; Ramires, Marcia Christina Camargo Hernandes; Lyra, Luciana Aparecida de Oliveira P.; Teixeira, Inessa Solek; Oliveira, Patrícia Costa; Tateno, Ricardo Yudi; Palma, Luiz Felipe; Campos, LuanaOlfactory dysfunction is commonly seen in COVID-19 patients; however, little is known about the pathophysiology and management. The present study aimed to report a series of cases in which three protocols of intranasal photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) were used for COVID-19-related olfactory dysfunction. Irrespective of the PBMT protocol, olfaction recovery was noted in all cases but with varying degrees of improvement. Although intranasal PBMT seems to be a promising therapeutic modality, more research is needed to better define effectiveness.
